Myth: Rape is committed in a dark alley, down a lonely road or in an isolated parking lot. Fact: 70% of all rapes occur in the home of the victim or the perpetrator. 22-27% occur in vehicles. That leaves only 3-8% of all rapes committed to occur in places that are stereotypical rape sites.
Myth: Rapes only happen at night. Fact: Rape happens every hour of every day. There is an average of 78 rapes committed every hour in the U.S. While it can happen day or night, rapes do occur slightly more often during evening and night hours, particularly on weekends. Incidence of attack also increases during the summer months.
Myth: Rape only happens to sluts. Girls who dress provocatively and “ask for it.” Fact: Rape victims are all ages, races, shapes, sizes and sexes. The youngest rape victim (in Kentucky) was 48-days-old and the oldest victim was 94-years-old. 29.2% of rape victims are under age 11, 32.8% of victims are between 12-17 and 38% of victims are over 18. This means a majority of rape victims are children.
Myth: Rapists are male strangers. Fact: 80% of all rape victims are assaulted by someone they know.
Myth: Women lie about rape all the time. They just “cry rape” because they regret it the next day or are trying to get revenge/attention. Fact: Only 2% of rape reports are false.
Myth: Men who rape just can’t control their sexual desires. Fact: There is no scientific support for the idea that rape is just a result of human (specifically masculine) nature. When society accepts the myth that men are subject to uncontrollable sexual urges, it makes women implicitly responsible for any unwanted sexual attention the receive, including rape.

“I said before that I had incredible teachers. And that’s true. But it’s more than that. My teachers were EMPOWERED to teach me. Their time wasn’t taken up with a bunch of test prep — this silly drill and kill nonsense that any serious person knows doesn’t promote real learning. No, my teachers were free to approach me and every other kid in that classroom like an individual puzzle. They took so much care in figuring out who we were and how to best make the lessons resonate with each of us. They were empowered to unlock our potential. They were allowed to be teachers.”—
